26 hour travel day, yikes.

Cars are a rarity in Iquitos. Everybody drives motocars.

A glimpse of our lodging… The trees sing.

Visiting a village with our missionary contact, Maggie. She and her husband Trent have the loveliest heart for people. In this area, both are well-known and well-loved by many.

Iquitos is the largest Peruvian city in the Amazon, and a site for many ecologists and environmentalists.

Sometimes there is not enough space on the motocar for everyone, so you hold on tight and ride in the back! (It wasn’t as scary as it sounds.)

A view from the top of a village area we visited. Unparalleled beauty.

In order to reach our sites, each day we traveled between 30 and 45 minutes by riverboat on tributaries of the Amazon.

One of our village sites, where we had games, a bible story, and painting for the children. Barrio Florido.

On this day, our site was a little deeper in the rainforest.

The village we were headed to in the photo above. It took us 3 hours to get here, but it was totally worth it.

The results from that day’s journey… One bus ride, half a mile of walking through a street protest/parade that blocked off the streets, one 40 minute boat ride, one rickety canoe crossing, and 30 minutes of hiking through mud… All with 13 kids from the Ohio suburbs. And we all made it! God is certainly funny. Somehow it was still my favorite day. Grateful.
When you lead 100 participants in ministry on the outskirts of the Amazon Jungle, you want an incredible team. And I honestly could not have asked for a better staff! I adore these ladies and had so much fun with them all week! (Not pictured, but still loved: Hector, Taylor, Crystal.)

My ministry group. Amazed, inspired, and encouraged by these students and their leaders. I am certain that Cleveland is a better place because each of you have returned there with a deeper understanding of God’s love for you and for others. Grateful to have shared this time with you. Love you guys!

Oh yeah, there’s one more…

Childhood dreams do come true! Visited a petting zoo on our way home from ministry one day and spent some time hugging sloths. This moment was definitely one of my life’s favorites. 🙂
